Teaching Win95 to create better short filenames

If you don't like the way Windows 95 appends a tilde (~) and a digit to short filenames, you can change this via the registry. You can change its behaviour so that unique, autogenerated, DOS-style, 8 dot 3 names are stored without tails.

  1. Start RegEdit (REGEDIT.EXE)
  2. Search for the FileSystem key
  3. In the right pane, add a binary value of NameNumericTail and set it to 00.
